WORLD GEOGRAPHY

USE THE MAPS AND LINKS TO FURTHER YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF WORLD GEOGRAPHY. I PUT THE QUESTIONS I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO ANSWER IN ITALICIZED LETTERS. REMEMBER WHAT YOU PUT INTO SOMETHING IS WHAT YOU GET OUT OF IT.

World Geography is a huge topic that when studied in depth easily takes multiple years to cover completely. Obviously we aren't going to spend that amount of time on geography. Therefore, will only do a very brief unit on geography as it relates to the historical topics we will be studying this year. That is why you seemingly have a very random list of places to identify on your map. Remember that this is only the first half of our class geography. We will do another geography unit after winter break where we will again focus our attention solely to the places where we will be studying historical topics in the second half of our class.

Along with the classroom discussions and our assignment in class you should explore the information in this post thourghly in order to fully understand our geography unit.

World Map: Can you identify which continents belong in which hemisphere?

Although a bit childish this site covers the basics in a very clear and concise format. You can review your understanding of how the world is broken into hemispheres, the use of latitude and longitude, and explore the many types of maps used within the field of geography.

These two links contain are an excellent resource for all types of large-scale maps. Included are a world region map, world climate, world plate techtonics, world population distribution, world economics, world volcanic earthquake activity, etc. By looking through these your eyes will truly be opened to what shape the world is in, geographically speaking. You know what they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Some of these are in really great detail therefore they take a bit longer than usual to load.

I would love to hear some comments about some of the issues that these maps relate to us. For example how does population distribution within a nation affect that nation's GNP? Or, how does a high illiteracy rate affect a nation? Also, how does climate affect where people live?
POST UP and let me know what went through your head.

Below is a link to a map showing the four earliest civilizations. Why do you think that they all grew around major rivers? How many modern cities around the world are located on waterways such as coastlines or major rivers? Explain.

World Map: Can you identify which continents belong in which hemisphere?
---------------------
Northern Hemisphere:
Europe, North America, 90% of Asia and 30% of Africa

Southern Hemisphere:
South America, 70% of Africa, Australia and Antarctica

Eastern Hemisphere:
Part of Europe, Asia, Australia, Part of Africa, Part of Antarctica

Western Hemisphere:
America, Part of Antarctica

For example how does population distribution within a nation affect that nation's GNP?
---------------------
The population's distribution within a nation affects the GNP alot, since the more
population that the nation has, the more goods it receives at the end of the year. Since
you said 'Nation' and not 'Country', I'm going to mention that the the money earned by people
who are living abroad is also counted as part of the GNP. So more population, more goods,
a better GNP.

Or, how does a high illiteracy rate affect a nation?
---------------------
Illiteracy affects a nation a lot. Since today's problems require better skills and knowledge
in la lot of different aspects - illiterate people are unable to solve them because of their
inabilities on certain academical fields. So technically illiterate people are poor and instead
of helping the nation grow and achieve something greater than other nations, they are an obstacle
in some viewpoints. But they still are humans and have the right to live.

Also, how does climate affect where people live?
---------------------
Climate is a factor, but I don't think that it is very strong to negatively affect the majority
of a nation's functionality. Let's take Russia for example, Russia has got a very cold climate and
Kosovo has got a really good climate - in my opinion - but that didn't stop Russia from being the first
nation to put a person in space or be a major political force today. While Kosovo has got other differences.
Lets say that Kosovo's population is less endangered of contracting illnesses that have to do with cold while
Russians are endangered.

Why do you think that they all grew around major rivers?
----------------------
Because major rivers like the Nile and Tigris flooded on a regular basis, which made the fields more fertile
and allowed farmers to use huge areas to plant. This way Egypt and other major powers managed to feed the armies
and it's population regularly which directly affected population's growth - which resulted into more men for the
army then more territories - then again more men - and so on.

Good job Gezim. What do the rest of you have to add to Gezim's comments?

I completely agree with Gezim, but i became a little bit confused in this question :

Also, how does climate affect where people live?

Respecting Gezim's opinion , my opinion is different.
I think that the climate affect is strong factor. It affects where do people live.
For example , in Greenland and Antarctica , people can't live there. They make only temporary camps for studying the conditions there.
Gezim mentioned Russia.
It is fact that Russia has more population than Kosovo has , but it has greater territory . For my opinion , People in Russia live in the places where the climate conditions are better.
As you can see , they don't live in the top of the northern Russia. They live in the cities that are far from the northern top there.
And Russia can't be compared with Kosovo in that way.Yes , they did put a person in the space , but they became a state a lot of years ago.
Kosovo has very good climate , but we have less territory , and as for now , we are doing nothing.
Our economy got stuck , and we couldn't do nothing till now , even if we became a "state" 7 months ago.
I think we need to have the culture and the intelligence that the people of other states have.
And we can do it because we have great conditions , and one of the most important of them is good climate.

I think we should add that more population requires more workplaces,
more salaries and more houses and more territory. So population growth
has a negative effect on GNP.

As for Illiteracy, I believe I can't add anything.

But for climate, climate is a major factor in everything. Now Russia
has got a medium cold climate, because what about going and living
in the north pole and sending people to space... That didn't happen
until now. So climate indeed has a major effect on people.

Gezim Basha said...

Hey Gent and Albulena,

I agree with both of you. And I see that there are a few small flaws in my opinions.

Russia indeed has got a huge territory and it's the main natural gas exporter for the world. And climate has a major effect.

Thanks,
I will see you all in class.

Hi everyone. Now I see that this blog was very necessary for us because now we can share our opinions about certain topics.
............................

I think that the population distribution in a country can affect that nation's "Gross National Product" in some ways . It could be that more population can give more goods , but it depends for which part of world we speak. If it's about USA or Germany or England or any other country , that could be true, but i don't think that it would be the same within the most places in Africa , or in any other "third world" land.

High illiteracy is one of the things that affects a country badly .We can see that clearly at the Illiteracy rate that Mr.DeGaetano posted .. and this high illiteracy in Africa is the product of the deficit of schools.

I think that if there were more schools and better life conditions ,the number of illitare people would dicrease.

At the other questions , i have the same opinion like Gezim , Gent and Albulena.

P.S: Thank you Mr.Degeatano for posting those links/maps. They'll be very needful for us.

About Climate - its very important.
In Pennsylwania they can grow corn and sell it ,so, corn growing is a business that people live from. With the money they earn from it they buy cars and make the car industy stronger. Its a chain reaction. In the other hand,in Sibera they cant grow anything. This shortens the business chain a lot and because of that, the economy is weak.

Population means more working force, more money, more homeless people, more houses, more construction companies, less free space, less clean air, less clean enviroment. Everything has its bad things and good ones but there is a wise saying: You have to give something to get something. In this case you sacrifice the enviroment for the economy.

This is my general opinion and I know you can make a good discussion out of this.

bye for now!

Excellent post Sami. You're certainly right, you have to give something to get something. Good point about the environment. Nations with a high GNP per capita also are the biggest consumers and generally speaking the largest polluters of the Earth.

Hi !

I just wanna say that all this questions are connected.

If a country has more population, it affects good the GNP only if the major part of the population is literate. And if the people are literate, so they know how to use their climate to have a good economic system, and good exportation for example, and of course, they know how to preserve their climate pure. So everything is connected, and the human isn't perfect, so that's why we haven't a perfect nation.

I have two examples : China, that is becoming the first country of the world. 1 miliard of people are chinese. And everything that we have is "made in China". They have developped their country even if they have the most population, and I can't talk about the climate, because I don't know how is the climate in China.

Switzerland is my second example. I know better this country. There aren't a lot of people in Swiss, but it's one of the richest country of the world. Why ? Letercy, I think. All the capital of the Swiss comes from the banks and the pharmacys (or drugstores I never know which one I have to use :D ) Also tourism, because of the climate.

So, of course, the population distribution, the climate and the illiteracy affects to the GNP or the nation, but every country has at least an advantage that the others countries maybe don't have.

Finally, I can say that every country has to make the good choices, to developpe his country with all that he has the opportunity to possess : maybe climate, or people literate, etc.

I say that for Kosova, where we have to work hard to prove to the world that we can build our state and we deserve our independance.

That's it ! I hope you understand my opinion. And I'm sorry for my grammar or vocabulary mistakes :D

See you Mr. DeGaetano and the others...

Good night !

Lets put it this way>

Russia - is huge and it has a lot of resources and some smart people but what they lack is good leaders.
Russia always goes up and down. Stalin made the Soviet Union a global power but in the end nothing was left and now Putin is doing the same thing - making Russia strong but stupid and cocky.

China - is super populated and very motivated and led by a communist government but a good one.
The urban areas of China are very very developed when we talk about business but the rural area is DEAD.

Swiss - extremely smart people, they use everything they have - from mountains to black water.
Swiss hasn't seen a war for a long time so all the banks are there for security reasons.
By the way, swiss coffee is delicious.

Kosova - is small but it has enough recurses to be more developed that it is. What lacks is education.
People need to have a wider vision - not to look just 2 feet from their toes.
Here, during the Yugoslavian period people were told what to do and now they suddenly can decide what they want to do. This is a difficult transition.

Economy is something that has to be build gradually because if it has been build for a short period it will die for a short period.

uns. said...

They grew around rivers because at that time there were no highways and all the transport and business was made by water - canals - example: Erie canal in the north, north - eastern part of the USA.

how does population distribution within a nation affect that nation's GNP?

Just as individuals have different levels of income so do countries. Some countries we would recognise as rich with a high total income (for the country as a whole) and high per capita income (per head of population), while others are poor with low levels of income. When we talk about the income of a country we mean the value of that country's production or output. Dividing this by population gives per capita income
The standard measure of a country's income is based on Gross National Product (GNP) per capita or per head of population.

GNP is a measure of a country's total income. It measures the total income earned by the citizens of a nation. Sometimes Gross Domestic Product, which measures a country's production or output is used as an indication of total income. The two produce slightly different results but are the best indicators available to economists and statisticians of a nations' income.

, how does climate affect where people live?

Like many people, you may develop cabin fever during the winter months. Or you may find yourself eating more or sleeping more when the temperature drops and darkness falls earlier. While those are common and normal reactions to the changing seasons, people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) experience a much more serious reaction when summer shifts to fall and on to winter.
